The term jazz began to be used in the late 10s and early 20s to describe a type of music that was emerging at that time in New Orleans, Chicago, and New York.
With its roots in African-American culture, jazz has a non-linear rhythm and its greatesthallmark is improvisation. Over the years, many sub-genres have emerged from this same root.
The historical evolution of jazz, like that of literature, fine arts, and classical music, follows a pendulum movement pattern, with alternating trends pointing in opposite directions. In the mid-1930s, the first massively popular jazz style, swing, emerged. In 1945, a much more radical style appeared that made fewer concessions to popular taste, bebop, which would be revised, radicalized and expanded in the 1950s with hard bop. At the end of the 1960s, the inevitable fusion of jazz and rock took place.
